Harry Hoogstraal was a pioneering American entomologist and parasitologist whose groundbreaking work on ticks and tick-borne diseases profoundly influenced medical entomology and public health worldwide. Born in 1914, he embarked on numerous expeditions to remote regions, including a significant journey to the Philippines in 1946-1947, where he documented diverse fauna and collected invaluable specimens that advanced scientific understanding of vector-borne pathogens. Serving as head of the Department of Medical Zoology at the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 in Cairo for over three decades, Hoogstraal authored hundreds of papers and monographs, establishing himself as a leading authority on acarology.
