Hans Nicolaus Riis
About the Author
Hans Nicolaus Riis (1804–1855) was a pioneering Danish missionary and linguist whose groundbreaking work laid the foundations for the study of the Akan language in Ghana. Arriving in the Gold Coast in 1832 under the Basel Mission, Riis immersed himself in the local culture, mastering the Akwapim dialect of the Twi language, also known as Odschi. His seminal publication, Elemente Des Akwapim-Dialects Der Odschi-Sprace, published in 1853, provided the first comprehensive grammar, vocabulary collection, and compilation of indigenous proverbs, serving as an invaluable resource for missionaries, scholars, and educators. Through his meticulous scholarship and dedication to cross-cultural understanding, Riis not only facilitated Christian evangelism but also preserved and promoted the linguistic heritage of the Akan people, influencing subsequent generations of African language studies.
