About the Author

Liu Xiang (c. 77–6 BCE), a distinguished scholar and bibliographer of the Western Han dynasty, is renowned for his editorial prowess in compiling and preserving ancient Chinese texts. Serving as an imperial librarian under Emperor Cheng, he undertook the monumental task of cataloging the vast imperial collection, which culminated in the creation of the 'Bielu,' an early bibliographic work that laid the foundation for Chinese literary classification. Liu Xiang's editorial efforts extended to moral and philosophical compilations, including the 'Lienü zhuan,' a collection of biographies of exemplary women, and his annotations on classical strategies. His most celebrated contribution is the edited compilation of the 'Zhan Guo Ce (Traditional Chinese Edition with Vertical Layout and Annotations),' a seminal historical text chronicling the diplomatic intrigues and stratagems of the Warring States period (475–221 BCE). Through meticulous scholarship, Liu Xiang not only safeguarded invaluable historical narratives but also influenced the moral and political thought of subsequent generations, embodying the Han era's commitment to cultural preservation and ethical governance.
