About the Author

Titus Livius, known as Livy, was a renowned Roman historian born in 59 BCE in Patavium (modern Padua), who dedicated his life to chronicling the grandeur and trials of Rome's past. Educated in rhetoric and philosophy, he moved to the imperial capital during Augustus's reign, where he composed his monumental Ab Urbe Condita, a comprehensive history spanning from Rome's mythical founding to his contemporary era. Though only fragments and summaries survive of the full 142-book work, Livy's narrative prowess vividly captures the virtues, follies, and pivotal events that shaped the Roman Republic and Empire. His writings, including the acclaimed second decade detailing Rome's conquest of Italy, influenced generations of scholars, statesmen, and writers, offering timeless insights into power, morality, and destiny.
