Saint Gregory of Nyssa, a pivotal figure in early Christian theology and one of the Cappadocian Fathers, was born around 335 AD in Caesarea, Cappadocia, into a devout Christian family that produced several saints. Educated in rhetoric and philosophy, he initially pursued a secular career before embracing monastic life and ordination under the influence of his brother Basil the Great. As Bishop of Nyssa from 372, Gregory defended orthodox doctrine against Arianism at key councils, including Constantinople in 381. His profound writings blend Platonic philosophy with biblical exegesis, exploring themes of the soul's immortality, divine infinity, and human deification.
