About the Author
Gordon L. Cooper, a pioneering American astronaut and Air Force test pilot, became one of the original seven Mercury astronauts selected by NASA in 1959, embodying the spirit of exploration during the dawn of the Space Age. As a key figure in Project Mercury, he flew the final and longest mission of the program aboard Faith 7 in 1963, logging over 22 orbits and demonstrating remarkable skill in manual spacecraft control. Later, he commanded the Gemini 5 mission in 1965, setting a spaceflight duration record of eight days with fellow astronaut Pete Conrad. Cooper's contributions extended to engineering and advocacy for space travel, including his involvement in the design of advanced spacecraft. Retiring from NASA in 1970, he continued to inspire generations with his firsthand accounts of humanity's reach for the stars, as detailed in his collaborative memoir We Seven: By the Astronauts Themselves, which captures the camaraderie, challenges, and triumphs of America's first spacefarers.
