Ziya Göikalp, born in 1876 in Diyarbakır, Ottoman Empire, was a pioneering Turkish sociologist, poet, and thinker whose works profoundly shaped modern Turkish nationalism and identity. Influenced by Ziya Pasha and Namık Kemal, he blended Western positivism with Islamic and Turkic traditions, advocating for a synthesis of culture that would propel Turkey into modernity. As a key intellectual during the Young Turk Revolution, Göikalp contributed to the Committee of Union and Progress, emphasizing secular education, language reform, and social unity. His poetry and essays, often written in simple yet evocative Turkish, captured the spirit of renewal amid empire's decline.
