Gerd Theissen

About the Author

Gerd Theissen is a distinguished German theologian and New Testament scholar, renowned for his innovative approaches to biblical studies that blend historical analysis with narrative storytelling. Born in 1943, he has spent decades exploring the socio-historical contexts of early Christianity, drawing on sociological methods to illuminate the life and times of Jesus and his followers. Theissen's work challenges traditional interpretations by emphasizing the interplay of social dynamics, religious movements, and cultural influences in the ancient world. His seminal book, The Shadow of the Galilean: The Quest of the Historical Jesus in Narrative Form, exemplifies this unique style, presenting rigorous scholarship through an engaging, fictionalized lens that brings the quest for the historical Jesus to life for both academic and general audiences. Throughout his career, Theissen has authored numerous influential texts that continue to shape contemporary theological discourse.
