About the Author

歌川国安 (Utagawa Kuniyasu) was a prominent Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period, renowned for his mastery of woodblock prints that captured the vibrant spirit of urban life in 19th-century Japan. Born in 1794, he trained under the influential Katsushika Hokusai before establishing his own distinctive style within the Utagawa school, blending dynamic compositions with intricate details in depictions of kabuki actors, beautiful women, and historical scenes. Kuniyasu's works, such as the illustrated series '金草鞋 9編 (国立図書館コレクション) (Japanese Edition)', exemplify his skill in narrative storytelling through visual art, contributing to the rich tradition of Japanese printmaking.
