Gary L. Heyward

About the Author

Gary L. Heyward is a former corrections officer whose harrowing experiences inside New York City's infamous Rikers Island jail complex inspired his gripping memoir, Corruption Officer: From Jail Guard to Perpetrator Inside Rikers Island. Drawing from his decade-long tenure as a guard, Heyward exposes the systemic corruption, violence, and moral decay that permeated the facility, detailing his own descent from protector to participant in illicit activities. Now an advocate for criminal justice reform, he shares his story to shed light on the human cost of institutional failure and the urgent need for change in America's prison system. Through raw honesty and unflinching detail, Heyward's writing serves as both a personal confession and a powerful call to action.
