About the Author

Frank McCourt, born in Brooklyn in 1930 to Irish immigrant parents, spent his early childhood in Limerick, Ireland, amid poverty and hardship that would later fuel his acclaimed writing. Returning to America as a teenager, he served in the U.S. Army, earned a degree from New York University, and taught high school English for nearly three decades in New York City. It was not until his retirement that McCourt turned to memoir, capturing the raw essence of his youth in his Pulitzer Prize-winning debut, Angela's Ashes: A Memoir, which vividly recounts his family's struggles with famine, illness, and unrelenting despair during the 1930s and 1940s. His honest, poignant prose transformed personal tragedy into universal storytelling, earning him international acclaim and inspiring a new generation of Irish-American literature. McCourt continued to explore his life's narrative in subsequent works, blending humor with heartache to illuminate the immigrant experience.
