About the Author
Fr. John Gerard S.J. (1564–1637) was an English Jesuit priest whose life exemplified unwavering faith amid persecution during the Elizabethan era. Born into a devout Catholic family, he entered the Society of Jesus and returned to England in 1588 as a missionary, risking execution under anti-Catholic laws. For nearly two decades, he evaded capture by government agents, ministering secretly to the faithful, performing sacraments, and establishing safe houses. Betrayed and imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1594, Gerard endured brutal torture yet miraculously escaped, continuing his clandestine work until his final arrest in 1606. Recounting his extraordinary experiences in his autobiography, he offers a vivid testament to spiritual resilience and divine providence in the face of relentless adversity.
