Flora Nwapa
About the Author
Flora Nwapa (1931-1993) was a pioneering Nigerian author and educator, widely regarded as Africa's first female novelist in the English language. Born in Oguta, she drew inspiration from her Igbo heritage and the rhythms of village life to craft stories that illuminate the complexities of women's experiences in a rapidly changing society. Her debut novel, Efuru, published in 1966, broke new ground by centering an independent woman's journey through love, motherhood, and societal expectations in pre-colonial and colonial Nigeria. As a teacher, publisher, and civil servant, Nwapa championed African literature and female voices, founding Tana Press to promote indigenous storytelling. Her works continue to resonate globally, celebrating resilience and cultural identity while challenging gender norms.
