About the Author

Feng Youlan (1895-1990), one of China's most influential philosophers of the 20th century, was a pioneering scholar who bridged traditional Chinese thought with Western philosophy. Born in Tanghe, Henan Province, he studied at Peking University and later pursued advanced degrees at Columbia University under John Dewey, earning his Ph.D. in 1924. Returning to China, Feng held prominent positions at Tsinghua University and other institutions, where he developed his 'New Rationalism,' a systematic reinterpretation of Neo-Confucianism that emphasized metaphysical principles and human nature. Despite the upheavals of war and political turmoil, including his tenure at the Southwest Associated University during the Sino-Japanese War, Feng's lectures profoundly shaped generations of students. His seminal work, 'Southwest Associated University Philosophy Lectures,' captures the essence of his dynamic teaching style, blending rigorous analysis with accessible insights into ethics, ontology, and the harmony of Eastern and Western ideas.
