Her seminal book, Breaking the Chains, Forging the Nation: The Afro-Cuban Fight for Freedom and Equality, 1812-1912, meticulously chronicles the pivotal role of Afro-Cubans in shaping Cuba's path to independence, blending archival research with poignant narratives of resistance and identity. Rushing's scholarship challenges Eurocentric histories, advocating for a more inclusive understanding of national formation.
