Evagrius Of Pontus
About the Author
Evagrius of Pontus (345–399 CE) was a pioneering Christian monk, theologian, and ascetic writer whose profound insights into the spiritual life profoundly influenced early monasticism and Eastern Orthodox thought. Born in Ibora, Asia Minor, he studied under the Cappadocian Fathers before retreating to the Egyptian desert, where he joined the communities of Nitria and Kellia, immersing himself in prayer, contemplation, and the battle against inner demons. Evagrius's writings, rooted in his ascetic experiences, emphasize the discernment of thoughts, the pursuit of apatheia (passionlessness), and the soul's ascent toward divine union. His works, often preserved through excerpts by later compilers like John Cassian, continue to guide contemplatives seeking liberation from spiritual afflictions and deeper communion with God.
