Eugène Labiche (1815–1888) was a French playwright celebrated for his sharp, inventive comedies and mastery of vaudeville. Born in Paris, he became one of the nineteenth century’s most popular dramatists, creating fast-paced plots filled with misunderstandings, social satire, eccentric characters, and finely timed physical humor. His plays often expose the habits and anxieties of the bourgeoisie while preserving an exuberant sense of theatrical fun. A prolific writer for the Paris stage, Labiche collaborated with numerous authors and was elected to the Académie française in 1880. His work remains influential in French comic theater and continues to reward lively performance.
