About the Author

Ernst Toch (1887–1964) was an Austrian-born composer, pianist, and teacher whose career bridged late Romanticism, modernism, and the musical life of twentieth-century America. Celebrated for his intellectual curiosity and inventive approach to rhythm, texture, and form, he wrote concert music, chamber works, operas, and scores for film. Toch also made lasting contributions as a musical thinker and educator. His study The Shaping Forces in Music: An Inquiry into the Nature of Harmony, Melody, Counterpoint and Form (The Dover Series of Study Editions, Chamber Music, Orchestral Works, Operas in Full Score) reflects his interest in explaining the principles underlying musical expression.
