Ernest Callenbach
About the Author
Ernest Callenbach was an American author and environmentalist whose visionary work reshaped discussions on sustainability and utopian societies. Born in 1929 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, he graduated from the University of Michigan and later moved to California, where he worked as a freelance writer and editor for the University of California Press. Callenbach's seminal novel, Ecotopia, published in 1975, imagined a secessionist Pacific Northwest nation thriving on ecological principles, influencing generations of environmental thinkers and activists. His writing blended speculative fiction with practical insights into green living, advocating for decentralized economies, renewable energy, and harmonious human-nature relationships. Over his career, he authored numerous essays, nonfiction books on ecology, and additional novels, leaving a lasting legacy in the ecotopian genre until his death in 2012.
