About the Author

Erle C. Ellis is an environmental anthropologist and distinguished professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he explores the profound impacts of human societies on Earth's ecosystems. His groundbreaking research challenges traditional views of nature, arguing that humans have been shaping the planet for millennia, leading to the concept of the Anthropocene—the current geological epoch defined by human dominance. Through interdisciplinary approaches blending ecology, history, and geography, Ellis illuminates how anthropogenic landscapes can be managed sustainably for future generations. As a leading voice in global environmental discourse, he advocates for innovative land-use strategies that reconcile human needs with biodiversity conservation, influencing policy and public awareness worldwide.
