Erik Barnouw was a pioneering historian of media and broadcasting, whose meticulous scholarship illuminated the evolution of communication technologies in America. Born in the Netherlands in 1908 and immigrating to the United States as a child, Barnouw pursued a career that blended academia, documentary filmmaking, and authorship. He served as a professor at Columbia University, where he founded the film division, and contributed to the Office of War Information during World War II. Barnouw's seminal works, including his comprehensive multi-volume history of American broadcasting, earned him acclaim for their rigorous research and engaging narrative style. A recipient of numerous awards, including the Peabody Award, he passed away in 1991, leaving a lasting legacy in media studies that continues to influence scholars and practitioners alike.
