About the Author

Epicurus (341–270 BCE) was an ancient Greek philosopher who founded the school of Epicureanism in Athens, emphasizing a life of moderate pleasures, the pursuit of knowledge, and freedom from fear and pain as the path to true happiness. Rejecting superstition and the notion of divine intervention in human affairs, he taught that the universe operates through natural laws and that the soul is mortal, thus liberating individuals from irrational anxieties about death and the afterlife. His philosophy, often misunderstood as hedonistic excess, actually advocates for simple living, friendship, and intellectual inquiry. Though few of his original works survive, his ideas profoundly influenced later thinkers, promoting a serene and self-sufficient existence amid life's uncertainties.
