El Lissitzky
About the Author
El Lissitzky (1890-1941) was a pioneering Russian artist, designer, architect, and typographer whose innovative work bridged the worlds of avant-garde art and revolutionary propaganda in the early 20th century. Born in Pochinok, he studied architecture in Darmstadt before embracing the Suprematist movement under Kazimir Malevich, developing his signature Proun series—abstract spatial constructions that blurred the lines between painting, sculpture, and architecture. Lissitzky's multifaceted career included photomontage, book design, and exhibition curation, influencing Bauhaus aesthetics and modern graphic design. His children's book illustrations, such as the surreal gouaches for the traditional Jewish tale Chad Gadya, showcased his ability to fuse folk narratives with geometric abstraction, as seen in his 11 original gouaches and eight designs for mathematical processes exhibited in 1979. A key figure in Soviet constructivism, Lissitzky's legacy endures in his promotion of art as a tool for social transformation.
