About the Author
Dudley Randall (1914–2000) was a pioneering African American poet, publisher, and literary activist whose work profoundly influenced the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Randall began writing poetry as a young man, drawing from his experiences in the U.S. Army during World War II and his lifelong commitment to civil rights and racial justice. In 1966, he founded Broadside Press, which became a vital platform for emerging Black voices, publishing over 200 titles and democratizing access to African American literature. As a poet, Randall's verses often blended lyricism with social commentary, addressing themes of identity, oppression, and resilience. His editorial efforts, including the seminal anthology The Black Poets, celebrated the rich tradition of Black poetry from spirituals to contemporary works, cementing his legacy as a guardian of cultural heritage.
