Dom Moraes
About the Author
Dom Moraes (1938-2004) was one of India's most celebrated poets, whose lyrical voice bridged the cultural divides of East and West with profound elegance and introspection. Born in Bombay to a prominent journalist father, Moraes left for England at seventeen to study at Oxford, where he quickly established himself as a prodigy in literary circles. His debut collection, A Beginning, won the Hawthornden Prize in 1958, marking the start of a prolific career that spanned over five decades. Moraes's work often explored themes of identity, exile, love, and the human condition, blending modernist influences with a distinctly Indian sensibility. Throughout his life, he traveled extensively, contributed to publications like The Times Literary Supplement, and authored memoirs and travelogues, but it was his poetry that cemented his legacy as a master wordsmith whose verses continue to resonate across generations.
