Doan Van Toai is a Vietnamese dissident and author whose life story embodies the turbulent history of Vietnam in the latter half of the 20th century. Born in Saigon, he became deeply involved in the anti-communist student movement during the Vietnam War, leading to his imprisonment by the North Vietnamese regime after the fall of Saigon in 1975. Enduring years of harsh captivity and interrogation, Toai emerged as a vocal critic of authoritarianism, fleeing to France in 1978 where he continued his advocacy for human rights and democracy.
