Dionysius of Halicarnassus, a prominent Greek historian and rhetorician of the late 1st century BCE, was born in Halicarnassus (modern-day Bodrum, Turkey) and spent much of his life in Rome, where he immersed himself in the study of Latin literature and oratory. Arriving in the city around 30 BCE, he devoted over twenty years to composing his monumental Roman Antiquities, a detailed historical account spanning from the city's mythical founding to the beginning of the First Punic War, aimed at demonstrating the Greek origins of Roman culture and institutions. Renowned for his elegant prose and critical analyses, Dionysius also authored influential treatises on rhetoric, including On the Arrangement of Words and critiques of famous orators like Thucydides and Isocrates, establishing himself as a key figure in classical literary criticism. His works, preserved through the Delphi Complete Works of Dionysius of Halicarnassus (Illustrated) (Delphi Ancient Classics Book 79), continue to offer invaluable insights into the intellectual world of Augustan Rome.
