Dean Mahomet, born in 1759 in Patna, India, was a pioneering figure as one of the earliest South Asians to publish a book in English. Serving as a camp follower in the British East India Company's army during the late 18th century, he chronicled his adventures across the Indian subcontinent in vivid detail. After relocating to Ireland and later England, Mahomet opened one of London's first Indian restaurants in 1810, introducing curry to British palates and blending cultural worlds. His memoir, The Travels of Dean Mahomet: An Eighteenth-Century Journey through India, remains a seminal work, offering rare insights into colonial India from an insider's perspective and highlighting themes of migration, identity, and cross-cultural exchange that resonate in modern postcolonial literature.
