Born in Philadelphia to a family of intellectuals, Riesman studied law at Harvard before pivoting to social sciences, influenced by thinkers like Erich Fromm and Paul Lazarsfeld. His seminal work, The Lonely Crowd, co-authored with Nathan Glazer and Reuel Denney, introduced the concepts of 'inner-directed,' 'other-directed,' and 'tradition-directed' personalities, offering a profound critique of the shifting American character amid rapid social changes.
