Daniel Neal (1678–1743) was an English dissenting minister and historian whose scholarly works illuminate the turbulent religious landscape of early modern England. Born in London to Puritan parents, Neal trained for the ministry at Utrecht and later served as pastor to Independent congregations in London and elsewhere. His magnum opus, 'The History of the Puritans or Protestant Non-conformists,' a comprehensive four-volume chronicle published between 1732 and 1738, meticulously documents the principles, struggles, and key figures of the Puritan movement from the Reformation era through the Restoration. Drawing on extensive archival research, Neal's narrative defends Nonconformist ideals while providing an objective account of their attempts at further ecclesiastical reform.
