About the Author
Constantine Cavafy (1863–1933) was a Greek poet born and raised largely in Alexandria, whose quietly revolutionary work transformed historical reflection, erotic desire, and personal memory into modern lyric poetry. Drawing on Hellenistic and Byzantine history as well as intimate experience, he wrote with a distinctive blend of irony, restraint, sensuality, and philosophical insight. Though he published relatively little during his lifetime, his poems became central to modern Greek literature and earned international acclaim through translation. His enduring influence is reflected in collections and anthologies such as NEO — HELLENE POETS: An Anthology of Modern Greek Poetry: 1750-2018.
