Colonel David H. Hackworth

About the Author

Colonel David H. Hackworth, a legendary figure in American military history, served with distinction in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, rising to the rank of colonel and earning numerous decorations for valor, including the Distinguished Service Cross and Silver Star. Retiring from active duty in 1971 after a 25-year career marked by frontline leadership and outspoken criticism of military bureaucracy, Hackworth transitioned into journalism, becoming a syndicated columnist for Newsweek and a frequent commentator on defense issues. His seminal memoir, About Face: The Odyssey of an American Warrior, offers a raw, unfiltered account of his experiences, blending tactical insights with poignant reflections on the human cost of war. A tireless advocate for soldier welfare and military reform, Hackworth's writings continue to influence debates on leadership, ethics, and the realities of combat.
