About the Author

Clorinda Matto de Turner (1852-1909) was a pioneering Peruvian author, journalist, and women's rights advocate whose literary contributions illuminated the social injustices of 19th-century Latin America. Born in Cuzco to a family of Spanish and indigenous descent, she drew from her own experiences to critique the oppressive structures of church, state, and society, particularly the exploitation of indigenous communities. Her seminal novel, Torn from the Nest (Library of Latin America), exposed the harsh realities of racial and economic disparities through a poignant narrative of family separation and cultural clash. As editor of the influential newspaper El Buen Tono and founder of the literary journal La Bolsa de las Damas, Matto de Turner championed education and gender equality, leaving an enduring legacy as a voice for the marginalized in Peruvian literature.
