Cheikh Anta Diop (1923-1986) was a pioneering Senegalese historian, anthropologist, and physicist whose groundbreaking scholarship challenged Eurocentric narratives of world history and illuminated the profound contributions of African civilizations. Educated at the Sorbonne in Paris, Diop argued persuasively for the African origins of ancient Egyptian culture and the advanced nature of precolonial Black African societies, drawing on linguistics, archaeology, and carbon dating to support his theses. A Pan-Africanist intellectual and political activist, he founded the Bloc of Senegalese Masses and ran for president of Senegal, advocating for cultural revival and scientific rigor in African studies. Through works like Precolonial Black Africa and The African Origin of Civilization: Myth or Reality, Diop not only reclaimed Africa's historical agency but also inspired generations of scholars to reevaluate global human heritage with an Afrocentric lens.
