Deserting from the East India Company's artillery in 1827, he reinvented himself as Charles Masson and spent over a decade wandering through the rugged terrains of Balochistan, Afghanistan, and the Punjab, where he conducted groundbreaking excavations at ancient sites like those of the Indus Valley civilization, unearthing thousands of coins and artifacts that enriched historical understanding of the region. His meticulous observations of local customs, politics, and landscapes were captured in his seminal work, Narrative of Various Journeys in Balochistan, Afghanistan, and the Punjab; Including a Residence in Those Countries From 1826 to 1838, a vivid chronicle that blends personal memoir with ethnographic insight.
