Charles Leland (1824-1903) was an American author, journalist, and folklorist whose lifelong passion for linguistics and cultural traditions led him to explore the hidden worlds of European folklore and esoteric practices. Educated at Princeton and trained as a lawyer, Leland abandoned the legal profession to pursue writing and travel, immersing himself in the languages and customs of Italy, Germany, and beyond. His groundbreaking work in documenting oral traditions culminated in the publication of Aradia: The Gospel of the Witches in 1899, a seminal text that introduced Western audiences to the ancient practices of Italian witchcraft and Stregheria, drawing from his encounters with a hereditary witch named Maddalena. Leland's scholarly yet accessible approach bridged anthropology and mysticism, influencing modern paganism and neopagan movements while preserving vanishing folk narratives for future generations.
