Charles Eastman
About the Author
Charles Eastman, also known as Ohiyesa, was a pioneering Native American author, physician, and advocate for indigenous rights, born in 1858 in what is now Minnesota to a Santee Sioux family. Raised traditionally by his uncle after his mother's death, he later pursued Western education, becoming one of the first Native Americans to graduate from Dartmouth College and earn a medical degree from Boston University. Throughout his life, Eastman bridged cultures, serving as a government physician and founding the Boy Scouts' YMCA program for Native youth. His writings eloquently capture the beauty of Sioux traditions, the challenges of assimilation, and a call for mutual respect between Native and white societies, leaving an enduring legacy in American literature.
