Charles, Duke of Orleans (1394–1465), was a prominent French nobleman, poet, and diplomat whose life was marked by both triumph and tragedy. Born into the royal House of Valois, he inherited the title of Duke at a young age and became a key figure in the Hundred Years' War, fighting valiantly at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, where he was captured by the English and held prisoner for 25 years. During his captivity in England, Charles honed his literary talents, composing elegant poetry that blended courtly love, introspection, and wit. Released in 1440, he returned to France, where he continued to write and play a role in the cultural renaissance of the Valois court.
