Charles Chiniquy
About the Author
Charles Chiniquy (1809–1899) was a Canadian-American author and former Catholic priest whose dramatic life story captivated audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. Born in Quebec, Chiniquy entered the priesthood but grew disillusioned with the doctrines and practices of the Roman Catholic Church, leading to his eventual conversion to Protestantism in 1858. Exiled from Canada amid controversies, he settled in Illinois, where he became a prominent evangelical preacher and lecturer, warning against what he saw as the perils of papal authority. Chiniquy's writings, drawn from his personal experiences, exposed the inner workings of the confessional and clerical life, blending autobiography with fervent critique to advocate for religious freedom and biblical truth. His works continue to resonate as historical testaments to one man's journey from faith to reform.
