Charles Alexander Eastman, known by his Sioux name Ohiyesa, was a pioneering Native American author, physician, and advocate for indigenous rights, born in 1858 in the Santee Sioux territory of Minnesota. Raised traditionally by his uncle after his mother's death, Eastman bridged two worlds, earning a medical degree from Boston University and serving as a government physician. His writings eloquently captured the wisdom, spirituality, and challenges of Native American life, drawing from personal experiences and cultural heritage to foster understanding between Native and non-Native peoples. Though his oeuvre primarily focused on Sioux traditions and biographies, Eastman's literary contributions extended to historical narratives, including translations and adaptations of regional histories that preserved diverse cultural stories. He passed away in 1939, leaving a legacy of eloquent advocacy for Native dignity and education.
