Catherine Sager
About the Author
Catherine Sager, born in 1835 in Ohio, became one of the youngest chroniclers of the American pioneer experience when her family embarked on the perilous Oregon Trail journey in 1844. At just nine years old, she witnessed the hardships of wagon train travel, including the tragic loss of her parents to illness, which thrust her and her siblings into the care of fellow emigrants. Raised in Oregon's Willamette Valley, Sager later married and raised a family, but her vivid memories of the trail's trials—harsh weather, scarce resources, and encounters with Native Americans—remained etched in her mind. In her later years, she penned a memoir that offers an intimate, firsthand glimpse into the resilience and determination of westward settlers, capturing the raw essence of frontier life with unflinching honesty and youthful wonder.
