About the Author

Carter Godwin Woodson, born in 1875 in New Canton, Virginia, to former slaves, rose from humble beginnings to become a pioneering historian and educator dedicated to illuminating the African American experience. As the second Black American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University, Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1915 and launched the Journal of Negro History, laying the groundwork for Black History Month, which he first observed as Negro History Week in 1926. His scholarly works, including The History of the Negro Church and The Mis-Education of the Negro, challenge Eurocentric narratives and advocate for self-determined education, influencing generations to reclaim and preserve Black heritage through rigorous historical research and advocacy.
