About the Author

Carlo Levi (1902-1975) was an Italian writer, painter, and anti-fascist activist whose multifaceted career bridged literature, art, and politics. Born in Turin to a Jewish family, Levi studied medicine but pursued his passions in painting and writing, becoming a key figure in the Resistance against Mussolini's regime, which led to his exile in 1935 to the impoverished region of Lucania in southern Italy. There, he documented the harsh realities of rural life under neglectful governance, culminating in his seminal work, Christ Stopped at Eboli: The Story of a Year (FSG Classics), a poignant blend of memoir and social critique that illuminated the divide between modern Italy and its forgotten south. Post-war, Levi served as a senator, continued painting, and authored essays and novels exploring themes of injustice, folklore, and human resilience, leaving a lasting legacy on Italian intellectual life.
