C. Eric Lincoln

C. Eric Lincoln was a pioneering scholar and theologian whose profound insights into the African American religious experience reshaped academic and cultural understandings of Black spirituality in America. Born in Athens, Alabama, in 1924, Lincoln rose from humble beginnings to become a leading voice on race, religion, and social justice, earning degrees from LeMoyne College, Fisk University, and St. Augustine's College before completing his Ph.D. at Northwestern University. His seminal work, The Black Church in the African American Experience, co-authored with Lawrence H. Mamiya, illuminates the pivotal role of Black churches as centers of resistance, community, and empowerment amid centuries of oppression. Throughout his career, Lincoln authored numerous books and articles, taught at prestigious institutions like Duke University and Union Theological Seminary, and influenced generations with his eloquent advocacy for civil rights and interfaith dialogue. He passed away in 2000, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire scholars and activists alike.
