Buddhadasa Bhikkhu
About the Author
Buddhadasa Bhikkhu (1906-1993) was a pioneering Thai Buddhist monk and philosopher whose teachings revolutionized modern interpretations of Theravada Buddhism by emphasizing its rational, scientific, and socially engaged dimensions. Born in southern Thailand as Ngum Phanich, he ordained as a monk at 20 and founded Suan Mokkh, an international forest monastery dedicated to dhamma study and practice. Rejecting ritualistic orthodoxy, Buddhadasa advocated for 'voidness' (suññatā) as a path to liberation from suffering, integrating Buddhist principles with ecology, social justice, and interfaith dialogue. His prolific writings, delivered in accessible Thai and translated globally, continue to inspire activists, scholars, and seekers worldwide, fostering a Buddhism that addresses contemporary ethical challenges without dogma.
