Bill Readings was a pioneering cultural critic and academic whose incisive analyses reshaped understandings of higher education in the late 20th century. Born in 1960 in Montreal, he pursued studies in literature and philosophy, earning his doctorate from McGill University before becoming a professor at the Université de Montréal. Readings' work delved into the commodification of universities amid globalization, critiquing how institutions increasingly prioritize bureaucratic efficiency over intellectual pursuit. His seminal book, The University in Ruins, published in 1996, remains a cornerstone text in educational theory, arguing that the modern university has devolved into a 'ruins' of its former ideals, serving corporate rather than humanistic ends. Tragically, Readings died in a plane crash in 1994 at the age of 34, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence debates on academia's role in society.
