Bharati Mukherjee
About the Author
Bharati Mukherjee, a pioneering voice in postcolonial literature, was born in Calcutta, India, in 1940 and immigrated to the United States in 1961, where she became a naturalized citizen and a celebrated chronicler of the immigrant experience. Educated at the University of Calcutta and later at Wellesley College and the University of Iowa's Writers' Workshop, Mukherjee's writing deftly explores themes of identity, cultural displacement, and reinvention among South Asian diaspora communities. Her novels and short stories often blend sharp social commentary with vivid portrayals of women's lives navigating tradition and modernity. Mukherjee taught at universities including McGill and the University of California, Berkeley, influencing generations of writers until her passing in 2017. Her work continues to resonate for its unflinching honesty and lyrical insight into the complexities of belonging in a globalized world.
