Bert Stiles
About the Author
Bert Stiles was a young American writer whose life and literary legacy were tragically cut short by the ravages of World War II. Born in 1920 in Denver, Colorado, Stiles attended Harvard University, where he honed his skills as a poet and storyteller before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1942. Serving as a B-17 bombardier, he flew numerous perilous missions over Nazi-occupied Europe, experiences that profoundly shaped his writing. His only published book, 'Serenade to the Big Bird,' a raw and poignant memoir compiled from letters and diary entries, captures the harrowing realities of aerial combat, the camaraderie among crew members, and the fragile line between life and death in the skies. Killed in action at age 24 during a mission over Germany in 1944, Stiles left behind a testament to the human spirit amid the chaos of war, earning posthumous acclaim for his vivid, unflinching prose that blends humor, horror, and heartfelt reflection.
