Bao Ninh, born in 1952 in Hanoi, Vietnam, is a renowned Vietnamese author whose works profoundly capture the harrowing experiences of the Vietnam War from the perspective of a North Vietnamese soldier. Serving in the Glorious Combat Unit 027 from 1969 to 1975, Ninh endured the loss of nearly all his comrades, an ordeal that deeply informed his writing. His seminal novel, The Sorrow of War: A Novel of North Vietnam, originally published in 1990 as Nỗi Buồn Chiến Tranh, broke new ground by humanizing the often-overlooked narratives of the war's participants, blending raw emotion with unflinching realism to explore themes of trauma, memory, and the futility of conflict.
