Azouz Begag
About the Author
Azouz Begag is a renowned French-Algerian author, sociologist, and filmmaker whose work vividly captures the immigrant experience in post-colonial France. Born in 1957 in Algiers and raised in a shantytown on the outskirts of Lyon, Begag draws from his own life as the son of Algerian laborers to explore themes of identity, racism, and cultural hybridity. His breakthrough novel, Shantytown Kid, an autobiographical coming-of-age story, brought national attention to the struggles of the Beur generation—young Franco-Arabs navigating life between two worlds. A former advisor to the French Prime Minister on integration issues, Begag's writing blends humor, poignancy, and sharp social commentary, making him a vital voice in contemporary European literature.
